We are committed to the development of small, emerging black-owned enterprises and view our partnerships with these enterprises as an important way to contribute to Black Economic Empowerment.
Our strength in this area is reflected by the full points which we were allocated in our 2009 BBBEE score card for this element.
Our biggest partner in this area is Klipstone Transport (Pty) Ltd, which is 64% owned by Unitrans and 26% owned by Magnificent Mile, a company wholly-owned by former AfriSam Human Resources Director and businessman, Monwabisi Vika.
We retain a 10% stake in this company, which is contracted to transport bulk and bagged AfriSam cement within Gauteng province.
Additional enterprise development projects that we’re involved in aim to train members of the community, particularly the youth, in certain areas of work, with the objective of equipping them with skills to attain employment or open up their own businesses. Examples of these are:
- a woodwork course that the company sponsored for unemployed men in Malmesbury in the Western Cape
- the Sakh’isizwe project, which trains learners in the areas of electrical wiring and maintenance of domestic appliances in Copesville, KwaZulu-Natal
- The AfriSam Entrepreneurship Development Programme in Namibia which targets high school learners in order to fight unemployment
