AFRISAM HANDS OVER UPGRADED SCIENCE LABORATORY AND PLAY AREA TO UMHLATUZANA PRIMARY SCHOOL

AfriSam, through its Coedmore Quarry operations, has handed over an upgraded and fully equipped science laboratory and play area to Umhlatuzana Primary School in Ward 65, eThekwini Municipality, and the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) as part of its Social and Labour Plan Local Economic Development commitments for the 2023–2027 cycle.

The project was implemented in partnership with the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality and the Department of Education to support the educational needs of learners from the Burlington community. It responds to a need for improved learning infrastructure and provides learners with access to practical science learning resources, as well as a safe play environment that supports physical activity and motor development.

The project included the upgrading and equipping of a science laboratory with modern equipment and science apparatus, as well as the provision of play equipment for the school’s play area. The completed facilities are expected to benefit 582 learners.

In addition to enhancing the learning environment, the project contributed to local economic development by creating job opportunities during implementation, including opportunities for adults and youth from the surrounding community.

Speaking at the handover, AfriSam’s Regional Manager for KZN Achmat Khan, said the project demonstrates the company’s commitment to responsible partnerships, good governance and meaningful community investment.

“While this project is a requirement of our regulator, the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR), it is by no means a tick-box exercise. Projects of this nature are about more than infrastructure. They are about creating environments where learners can explore, discover and build confidence in their abilities. Through our Community Relations function, AfriSam continues to work closely with municipalities, government departments and local stakeholders to ensure that our Social and Labour Plan commitments deliver tangible and sustainable value,” said Khan.

The upgraded science laboratory is expected to strengthen learners’ exposure to science, technology, engineering and mathematics, while the new play area will contribute to creativity, learner wellbeing and holistic development.
