Environmental

Conserving the earth for future generations has always been part of AfriSam’s DNA and is underpinned by our core company value of ‘planet’. To this effect, AfriSam was the first cement manufacturer in southern Africa to publish an Environmental Policy in 1994.

Actions always speak louder than words and, over the years, AfriSam has demonstrated its commitment to sustainability through significant investment in research and development of processes and technology to ensure that we are able to produce environmentally responsible products. We have set the standard in terms of sustainable business practices and are considered the ‘green’ leader in our industry.

We published our first environmental policy in 1994, based on the 16 principles of the International Chamber of Commerce’s “Business Charter for Sustainable Development”. We review and update this policy regularly and commit ourselves to its principles.

We have undertaken initiatives in the areas of energy optimisation and emission reduction, where we are recognised as leaders; rehabilitating our old mining sites to a self-sustaining state; optimally using resources and reducing our carbon footprint. So far, we have made significant achievements in our drive towards sustainability. Amongst others, we:

  • Pioneered cement kiln emission improvements in Southern Africa
  • Were the first producer to install Continuous Emission measuring equipment capable of measuring 13 gas streams on an on-going basis
  • Were the first producer to conduct regular metal and dioxin and furan emission measurements in stack emissions
  • Were the first to install bag-house filter technology for kiln emissions in SA
  • Introduced our green cement product range in 2000 and came a step closer to becoming one of the lowest CO₂ generators per ton of cement in Africa
  • Use extenders in our cement which in turn, has resulted in a significant reduction in our clinker factor without compromising the quality of our products
  • Won the 2008 NBI Energy Efficiency Sector Award
  • Were the first cement company in Africa to launch a CO2 labelling on cement bags in 2009
  • Launched the first Eco-building cement range in the country in 2010
  • Won the Nedbank Green Mining Award in 2010
  • Won the Mail and Guardian Greening the Future award in 2011
  • Signed up for the Eskom 49M initiative in 2012
  • Have implemented a 5 year Sustainability roadmap to promote sustainable business practices throughout all operations across the business.

We would like to hear from you.
