High Strength Cement

AfriSam High Strength Cement is a specially developed composite cement for use in brick- and block-making, reservoirs, precast operations, structural concrete, shotcrete and mining operations.

Features and Benefits

Versatility:

AfriSam High Strength Cement can be used on its own, extended with selected mineral components or with plasticisers. This product caters for an array of specialist concrete applications to produce a wide range of cost-effective solutions. Applications include flowable or self-compacting concrete and pumped concrete for slabs on the ground.

High early strength development:

AfriSam High Strength Cement is known for its typical high early strength, offering you outstanding benefits in terms of time-saving and meeting production deadlines. This makes it suitable for construction and structural work, as well as brick and block making. Applications include post-tensioned and pre-stressed members, early stripping of formwork in fast-track construction, and concreting in cold weather.

Workability and durability:

AfriSam High Strength Cement offers consistent quality. Due to its use of mineral components, this cement offers improved durability of concrete necessary in aggressive environments such as sewage treatment works and concrete structures in marine environments. The extremely fine particles of the mineral components act as nuclei for the formation of calcium silicate, giving a fine-filler effect and producing a denser and more homogenous microstructure in the hardened cement paste and in the aggregate interfacial zone.

Information

Tips for storage

  • Store your cement raised off the floor on a wooden pallet or on plastic sheeting to prevent moisture absorption.
  • Store in a dry enclosed area, such as a container or weatherproof shed to protect it from rain and other elements.
  • Keep doors and windows closed to eliminate damp air or draughts.
  • Ideally cover your cement bags with plastic sheeting or a tarpaulin.
  • Ensure that you pack your cement bags in a manner that allows a ‘first in – first out’ approach
  • Never store your cement with other products such as fertiliser, gypsum based products or foodstuffs, as even the smallest amount of contamination can have a negative effect on the performance of your cement in concrete, mortar and plaster mixes.
  • Always stack the cement bags in alternate directions, even if the bags are not palletised.

Health and safety

Occupational exposure limits to cement are recommended in the Occupational Health and Safety Act and summarised as follows:

  • Always wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (i.e. boots, gloves, safety glasses and dust masks) when working with cement, concrete, plaster and mortar.
  • Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing, if skin contact occurs, wash off with water immediately. Consult a medical professional for any persistent skin problem.
  • When lifting, keep a straight back and bend knees. Alternatively use a trolley or get help to prevent personal injury.
  • Bags should be carried at waist height or flat on the shoulder.
  • Ensure that 50kg cement bags are stored in stacks of no more than 12 bags high
