Rapid Hard Cement

Controlled fineness:

AfriSam Rapid Hard Cement is milled to a carefully controlled fineness and contains a strength modifier to ensure higher early strengths.

High early-strength development:

Its higher fineness implies that a larger surface area is available to react with water, increasing the rate of hydration and resulting in exceptionally high early-strength development.

Cold weather conditions:

It is ideal for use in cold weather conditions due to its rapid rate of hydration.

Suitable for the high early-strength applications

The superior high early strength of Rapid Hard Cement makes it ideal for:

• the precast concrete industry where quicker demoulding times are required.
• high early-strength development products.
• fast-track construction projects to facilitate earlier stripping of formwork, earlier bridge launching or higher sliding rates.
• cold weather concreting as the high liberation of heat of hydration can offset the retardation effect of low temperatures.

Tips for storage

• Store your cement raised off the floor on a wooden pallet or on plastic sheeting to prevent moisture absorption.
• Store in a dry enclosed area, such as a container or weatherproof shed to protect it from rain and other elements.
• Keep doors and windows closed to eliminate damp air or draughts.
• Ideally cover your cement bags with plastic sheeting or a tarpaulin.
• Ensure that you pack your cement bags in a manner that allows a ‘first in – first out’ approach
• Never store your cement with other products such as fertiliser, gypsum based products or foodstuffs, as even the smallest amount of contamination can have a negative effect on the performance of your cement in concrete, mortar and plaster mixes.
• Always stack the cement bags in alternate directions, even if the bags are not palletised.

Health and safety

Occupational exposure limits to cement are recommended in the Occupational Health and Safety Act and summarised as follows:

• Always wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (i.e. boots, gloves, safety glasses and dust masks) when working with cement, concrete, plaster and mortar.
• Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing, if skin contact occurs, wash off with water immediately. Consult a medical professional for any persistent skin problem.
• When lifting, keep a straight back and bend knees. Alternatively use a trolley or get help to prevent personal injury.
• Bags should be carried at waist height or flat on the shoulder.
• Ensure that 50kg cement bags are stored in stacks of no more than 12 bags high
